Taught at the Table Collection
He had to justify his seat —
but the table already knew him.
Some of the most powerful lessons we ever received were never found in a classroom. They were passed down over a pot of greens, a Sunday roast, and somebody's kitchen table. What you were taught there is still working for you, even now.
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Legacy 4 Xavier newsletter. We are starting exactly where we should: at the table.
Meet Dr. Ticey Hosley
Dr. Hosley is an educator, a diversity and inclusion strategist, and a Friend of the Legacy in every sense of the word. She holds a doctorate from UC Berkeley and brings over 20 years of lived expertise to the organizations she serves.
She has spent her career helping people name what they've always felt — and then do something about it.
When the Table Calls You Back
Dr. Hosley was at home one Sunday, recharging for the week ahead, when her phone rang. It was her son — and something in his voice was different.
He wasn't upset, exactly. But there was a confusion there — the kind that only a mother who has prepared a Black child for this world would instantly recognize.
"He did not refer to them as micro-aggressions — but in my field of work, I can spot them from miles away."
Her son is a Civil Engineer, brilliant and grounded, and a proud graduate of Florida A&M University — FAMU. He was calling to describe what he was experiencing at work: condescending treatment from a colleague, moments that didn't feel right but were hard to name. His mother had words for all of it. She always has.
✦ HBCU Proud — Florida A&M University
FAMU has always produced people who know how to hold their ground in any room. Dr. Hosley's son walks in a long line of Rattlers who earned every seat they've ever sat in.
K. Michelle graduated with honors on a music scholarship and won Miss FAMU. Anika Noni Rose — Tony Award winner and the voice of Princess Tiana — is a proud Rattler. So is Will Packer, producer of Girls Trip and Ride Along. Tennis legend Althea Gibson, the first person of color to win a Grand Slam, got her start there too.
FAMU doesn't just educate — it equips.
Dr. Hosley's blog also shares the story of a well-established Black professional attending a business dinner with his executive team. He was accomplished, prepared, and exactly where he was supposed to be.
But the CEO kept prompting him to share more about himself — apparently because his locs made it easy for others to assume he didn't belong. He was being asked to justify his seat at the table.
Dr. Hosley has a name for that: implicit bias, and micro-aggression. Everything those men needed to survive those moments was poured into them long before they walked through that door. That is the power of what was taught at the table.
This Week's Action
Reach out to someone in your circle navigating a situation at work that just feels "off." Being the voice that says "I see you, I believe you, and I have words for what you're experiencing" is one of the most powerful legacy lessons you can pass on.
